During International Glaucoma Week, our specialists Elena Milla and Marta Pazos participated in the Spanish Glaucoma Society (SEG) Congress in Toledo, one of the most important scientific meetings in the field, where the latest advances in the diagnosis, treatment, and understanding of this disease were discussed.
Beyond intraocular pressure: a paradigm shift
For years, glaucoma has mainly been associated with elevated intraocular pressure. However, we now know that this view is incomplete.
Dr. Elena Milla chaired the session “Beyond intraocular pressure”, focused on normal-tension glaucoma, a type of glaucoma in which optic nerve damage occurs even when pressure levels are considered normal.
This approach requires considering additional factors —vascular, structural, and individual— and adapting diagnostic and treatment strategies to each patient.
Recognition for glaucoma research
Within the framework of the congress, Dr. Elena Milla was awarded the THEA-SEG 2026 Award for Ophthalmology Research for the best publication in glaucoma.
The award was granted to the Spanish multicenter Paul Glaucoma Implant Group for their work published in Scientific Reports, a study contributing to the development of new surgical solutions for glaucoma treatment.
This recognition highlights the value of collaborative research and continuous progress in a disease that remains one of the leading causes of vision loss worldwide.
New European guidelines redefining glaucoma management
Dr. Marta Pazos moderated the SEG-EGS Joint Meeting, focused on the new guidelines from the European Glaucoma Society (EGS).
These guidelines represent a turning point in glaucoma management, introducing new diagnostic criteria, more personalized follow-up strategies, and treatment approaches tailored to each patient profile.
The goal is clear: earlier diagnosis, better treatment, and long-term preservation of vision.
Commitment to excellence and innovation
Active participation in scientific congresses and international research allows the latest advances in glaucoma to be translated into clinical practice.
At visiõnclínic, this commitment is reflected in care based on up-to-date knowledge, advanced technology, and the experience of a highly specialized team.
